The marquee on the Riviera Theatre is ever changing, but this particular marquee is a special tribute to Charleston, celebrating its 350th anniversary! Unfortunately, because of Covid 19, it went by relatively unnoticed. I loved painting the Belmond Charleston Place Hotel's Riviera Theatre this year and decided I would digitally re-letter the marquee for this auspicious occasion.
In my painting I chose to eliminate people and cars in order to create a timeless representation of the Art Deco style Riviera Theatre. Little did I know that the streets of Charleston on its 350th anniversary would be so deserted. King Street is one of the busiest streets if not the busiest street in Charleston.
My painting ironically has become an accurate historic depiction of the day. The Covid 19 virus might have temporarily closed down Charleston, but nothing will stop Charleston from bouncing back soon to become the vibrant, culturally rich downtown that it was just a few long weeks ago.
There is a palpable love of Charleston that's not just felt by Charlestonians, but by many transplants like ourselves. We are all anxious to help Charleston celebrate throughout the remainder of this year by supporting all of the local businesses and restaurants.
This commemorative print represents both Charleston's past and its future! Happy 350th Charleston!
