Approaching one of the most visited tourist attractions in Venice, the Rialto Bridge, one marvels at the architectural icon re-built in stone (originally in wood) and completed in 1591. The Rialto is the oldest bridge spanning the Grand Canal and is a hub for shoppers and sightseers. Shops line the bridge and were originally built there to help pay for the cost of maintaining the bridge.  The shops at the Rialto along with the fish and fruit markets nearby have all been a destination for merchants for centuries.
