At first glance, this rooftop scene near the Colosseum in Rome, appealed to me because of the two domed bell towers and the interesting skyline. At second glance the foreground structure of renovated ruins made me curious about the history of the old building and it’s arched windows. This scene is a section of Trajan’s Market, which is one of the world’s oldest shopping malls. The large arches at the base of the painting used to be individual shops selling a vast variety of goods. In ancient Roman days the upper floors were used for offices.
