The aged palazzos with their water gates, colorful and majestic, worn by the elements over the centuries, were very appealing to me as a subject. I envisioned as I began this project a significant painting due to the grandness of the architecture. I chose to work on a larger scale to allow for the use of a palette knife to create texture in the weathered and distressed plastered walls. The multi-colored buildings complement each other which made the composition very pleasing and enticing to paint. I was intrigued too by the varying styles of the many windows and the differing shutter styles and their varying positions. They show life and a connection to the outdoors. Some are trying to catch a breeze and others are blocking out the hot Venetian sun.
