Maneuvering the Venetian Canals

I just finished putting the final touches on my latest painting of Venice.  All the details were added for interest but kept to a minimum.  I decided to blend and soften the various colors in the water.  I tried to achieve an overall softness to the painting while maintaining some high value colors.

There is something about this composition that makes me want to paint it again.  I’d love to paint it under different lighting conditions, with a different palette, on a grand scale, more impressionistic or even realistic.  This isn’t always the case as I’m usually ready to move on to another subject.

I became a member of  the American Impressionist Society this year and I’ve decided to enter this painting into their national juried show.  I’ll keep you posted once we hear whether or not Maneuvering the Venetian Canals makes the cut.

Thank you to all that are following my blog and have watched the progress of this painting.  Your comments here and on Facebook and LinkedIn have all been appreciated.  As much as I’d like to keep painting Venice, I’m also excited to start a series of cottage scenes.  I have a specific cottage with various composition possibilities in mind that is highly motivating to me.  I hope you’ll check back soon to view the work in progress of a whole new genre for me.

Let me know what you think of the finished work if you get a chance.
