Several times a year many of the historic wooden schooners gather in Camden Harbor before the annual schooner races. My painting entitled Flags Abound depicts the gathering of the fleet over July 4th weekend, in preparation for the Great Schooner Race. The Great Schooner race is hailed as “the largest gathering of traditional schooners in America.”

The Isaac Evans schooner is being maneuvered into place by the yawl-boats. It was fascinating to watch these master mariners handle such a difficult task with ease.

In the background are the J. & E. Riggin, the Heritage, and Grace Bailey schooners with their full colors flying high in the breeze; a sign that the wind might cooperate this year, making for a fast race.

This colorful moment left such an impression on me, that despite all of the overwhelming details involved I knew I had to paint it. I love the scene and all that it represents.

There are a limited number of these classic wooden vessels from yesteryear still sailing. The cost and amount of time it takes to keep them seaworthy is staggering. Thankfully, these particular schooners continue to grace the Penobscot Bay with their beauty.

They have provided me wonderful subject matter for many years and for that I am most grateful.
